MARCH 24 - The Calgary Surge of the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced Monday they have signed six-foot-three guard Khyri Thomas for the 2025 season. Thomas, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, played collegiately at Creighton University, where he averaged 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.5 assists over three seasons. Known for his defensive prowess, Thomas was a two-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year (2017, 2018) while playing for the Bluejays. He was selected 38th overall in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers and subsequently traded to the Detroit Pistons. During his NBA tenure, Thomas appeared in 39 games, averaging 4.1 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game. After his time in the NBA, Thomas built an impressive international career, playing in top leagues around the world, including in Turkey, Spain, and Italy. The game will take place Thursday, June 19, 2025, at 7:30 p.m. MST against their provincial rivals the Edmonton Stingers, teeing up another Battle of Alberta. Across the 2023 and 2024 CEBL seasons, the Surge have won seven of 10 games against the Stingers, including eliminating them in the Western Conference Semifinal two years in a row. “SURGE 2 RED DEER” promises to be a celebration of basketball, premier entertainment, and community for families and organizations across Red Deer and Red Deer County. The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), TSN, Canada’s Sports Leader, and RDS, the leading Canadian French-language specialty sports channel, announced Thursday the CEBL on TSN and RDS broadcast schedules for the 2025 season. TSN’s CEBL coverage in 2025 includes 17 nationally televised games, beginning Friday, May 23 when the Ottawa BlackJacks visit the Montréal Alliance at 8 p.m. ET, and culminating with all playoff and 2025 Championship Weekend (CW25) games in Winnipeg this August.
